INDUSTRIAL IMPACT WRENCH NOISE AND VIBRATION EXPOSURE

Anyone working with impact tools like air impact wrenches, for example, is subjected to potential health dangers like Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS, which is the numbing or whitening of fingers), Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears) or hearing loss. Each of these symptoms is a side-effect of prolonged and repeated exposure to noise and vibration from these kinds of power tools.

According to a report by the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, occupational hearing loss is the most commonly recorded occupational illness in manufacturing. It accounts for 1 in 9 recordable illnesses. The report also states that “many more workers would have measurable occupational hearing loss but would not yet have become hearing impaired” and that “the rate of hearing loss growth is greatest during the first 10 years of exposure”. This may appear that hearing loss prevention is more important to new workers, but experienced workers are affected too. With continued exposure to high noise levels, the hearing loss spreads into the frequencies needed to understand speech. So, essentially, preventing occupational hearing loss is important for all employees.

HAVS is the most common symptom resulting from the use of any vibrating tool – and the longer the exposure the more the risk of developing symptoms. Correct protective equipment for hands, feet, eyes and ears can help minimise the harmful effects, while using better tools and having the knowledge to use them in order to reduce health hazards is the ideal solution.

 

UNDERSTANDING DECIBELS

How do you know if the noise level or levels of vibration, in the power tools you use are dangerous? Firstly it is important to understand decibel readings. For example, did you know that the average conversation is 60dB, and that 70dB is not 10% more decibels but is in fact double that of 60dB? 100dB is literally deafening, and some power tools, like a hammer drill, can get close to 115dB.

Exposure to HAVS depends on the intensity of the vibration expressed as acceleration in metres per second squared (m/s²) and the duration of exposure. America’s National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health provides guidelines on estimating safe levels and to limit exposure to dangerous noise and vibrations.

 

 

 

According to the European Union Manufacturer's Directive, if a person is exposed to action value over 2.5 m/s², then action to lessen the exposure should be taken.  It is important to understand the limitations, and to ensure that all employees are adequately protected from – and understand the dangers of – working with power tools that contribute to hearing and other loss over time.
